Pay Per Click
Pay per click (PPC) is now one of the major sources of revenue for search engines like Google, Yahoo and Overture, and is therefore here to stay. While search engines are free for the end user, the surfer, they are not always free for the person who wants to use them to advertise their products or services. When a surfer search's using specific key words the majority of search engines now display small 2 to 4 line text ads with the regular search results. They are usually distinguished as an ad by being in a different position, colour or text from the free listings. The big difference is that when a surfer clicks on one of those ads, opposed to the free listings, the advertiser pay a small fee, from their account that they have setup with the search engine, hence pay per click. A major advantage for the advertiser is that they can usually set up an account immediately, and then have their ads running within minutes or a few hours. The other main advantage is that their ads appear at or near the top of the listings for the respective keywords, and therefore will get traffic. There is no waiting period of days, weeks or even months which can occur when trying to get your website indexed by the search engines. As an advertiser you need to calculate your ROI (return on investment) for your ad campaign. A badly run PPC campaign can easily make a loss if not carefully tested.
